Here in Wisconsin, October is a beautiful month with the falling leaves (and falling temperatures). I believe this month is also a transition month ? and as such, provides a good time for general housekeeping chores.

This issue of DM Review provides articles that may incite you to do a little business intelligence or data warehousing housekeeping. Lou Agosta and Jill Eckhaus' columns discuss security. Is your organization providing optimal data security? Larry English's column challenges the best-of-breed mentality. Is your organization hiding behind inappropriate applications? "Going from Unacceptable to Exceptional: The How and Why of Balanced Scorecarding" by Leo Voskamp may encourage you to consider implementing this valuable analytic application if you have not already done so, and "Seeing the Needle in the Haystack" by Richard Brath and Andrea Brody may do the same regarding data visualization.

I am pleased to announce a new columnist, Larry Goldman, who will write about matters related to customer intelligence. Larry has more than 13 years of experience in database marketing, business intelligence and customer analytics, as well as customer and marketing strategy, customer experience optimization, sales force automation and call centers. Goldman's column will regularly remind us that customer management issues should not be swept under the rug.

If your October housekeeping includes purchasing a business intelligence application, be sure to read the business intelligence product reviews beginning on page 61. These reviews, submitted by customers who are actually using the products to gain competitive advantage, are invaluable when researching applications. They provide information concerning product platforms, functionality and deliverables, as well as strengths and weaknesses ? information you may not hear from the vendor during the sales process.
