From the Editor

Dear Readers,

Business intelligence is growing up. As the technology matures, new demands are placed on IT to deliver strategy and tactics as well as operational processing to not only the decision-makers, but also line-of-business users. This expansion of scope into performance monitoring and process management opens new vistas for DM Review to explore.

Hot topics include governance, process management and service-oriented architectures, and in the May issue, we have feature stories on all three. "Governance Dashboard for Enterprise Storage" by Dick Benton looks at enterprise storage management from an IT governance perspective. Nari Kannan recognizes that process and performance management circles are intersecting. His article presents 10 ways that process excellence impacts corporate performance management. Our cover story, "If SOA Looks Hard to You, You're Looking at it Wrong" by John Sadd examines the "services" aspect of a service-oriented architecture.

There is a lot of discussion on next-generation BI. Columnists Larry Goldman and Jonathan Geiger share their perspective on the current state of BI in the evolutionary process. As the industry moves from querying to analysis across the enterprise data warehouse, the executive interview with Steven Brobst and Michael Koehler highlights the parallel growth within Teradata.

Just as you don't get the answer you want from a sullen teenager, so too, you don't get the answers you need to run a competitive organization without asking the right question. With the advent of SQL Server 2005, we introduced a special section devoted to describe some of the new functionality. This issue focuses on high availability.

DM Review continually strives to keep you updated on new trends and technologies by adding new columnists, providing topical Web seminars and offering white papers and research for you to download. Welcome Steve Hoberman, who will present a "Design Challenge" each month. His introductory column focuses on solutions to define enterprise data model ROI.

We have exciting additions to DMReview.com as well. Steve Miller will author a new online column called "Open BI Forum." Data professionals and the worldwide membership of the Data Management Association will find the monthly DAMA column online at www.dmreview.com. Watch for it the fourth Friday of each month. If you haven't visited the Ask the Expert feature lately, please check out this excellent resource. Our newest Ask the Expert panelist is Anne Marie Smith. Look for her insightful answers along with the other knowledgeable panelists.

If there is something you'd like to see included in DM Review, please let me know at maryjo.nott@sourcemedia.com. Enjoy the issue.
