GFI Software Network Security Survey Results

Despite the best efforts of many small and midsized businesses (SMBs) to install antivirus software and a firewall, four out of 10 companies believe that their networks are still not secure. This figure was found in a recent survey of 455 IT executives from U.S. SMBs. The survey was conducted by eMediaUSA on behalf of GFI Software, an international network security software developer. GFI plans to release the full results of the survey later this week.

 

Other highlights of the survey include:

  • Thirty-two percent of the companies surveyed had suffered a breach over the past 12 months mainly due to a virus attack (69 percent), followed by infected Internet downloads (30 percent), and loss of hardware, e.g., laptops (24 percent). Only 2 percent reported a breach involving some form of fraud or identity threat.
  • Only 19 percent of the respondents said they had deployed an endpoint security solution on their network. This indicates that few companies may consider the fact that an employee’s iPod or USB stick can be a threat and used to copy data from the network or else install unauthorized software or upload viruses and malware.
  • Nearly half of small companies in the U.S. believe that employees with a better knowledge of security issues and the part they play in a company’s IT setup would help to improve network security, while one in four say that even management should be more aware of security issues and threats.
