Open Source Software Research from Saugatuck
According to Saugatuck Technology research, open source software is now considered acceptable and desirable by user executives across all software categories.
Sample research findings:
-
Open source software may now account for as much as 10 percent of worldwide user software with thirty-two percent of surveyed executives expecting that by 2010, more than half of their key on-premise software will be open source.
-
While the combination of reduced costs and reduced vendor dependence will continue to drive open source adoption through 2012, the ability to adapt and refine source code will remain a top-tier motivator for users including SMBs.
-
By 2010, more than 35 percent of new commercial software implementations will include open source components.
-
By 2012, four or five dominant open source master brands (some of whom will come from a traditional IT software heritage) will emerge, that will influence or control at least 30 percent of the open source software marketplace.
-
Through 2012, the explosive growth of mixed-source environments will dramatically increase the risk profile and exposure for users and vendors alike, mandating potentially expensive compliance management investments.
