Master Data Management

Strategies and Tools to Improve Data Migration

Aberdeen research" MDM Benchmark Report from April 2007 entitled, "Master Data Management: Strategies and Tools to Improve Data Migration," reveals that 98 percent of companies struggle with data quality, data integration and data communication issues; yet less than half have made any investment in master data management (MDM) tools.

Applying MDM tools strategically can improve data quality, which can, among other things, turn a data migration nightmare into a winning proposition. Ninety-five (95) percent of best-in-class (BIC) companies have seen an improvement in on-time completion of data migration projects, upon implementing an MDM strategy. Aberdeen surveyed more than 120 companies to determine the impact their MDM strategy has had on their data governance, quality, integration and migration.

Aberdeen used various key performance criteria to distinguish BIC companies: on-time and on-budget completion of data integration projects and data usability. Best-in-class companies showed improvement in all areas averaging:

  • 94 percent improved on-time completion
  • 88 percent improved on-budget completion
  • 68 percent improved data usability

Firms enjoying best-in-class performance shared several common characteristics, such as:

  • 60 percent of BIC companies have a tested business continuity plan for data migration projects, versus 37 percent of average and 21p percent of laggard companies.
  • 53 percent of BIC companies have seen an improvement in data quality as a result of implementing an MDM solution.
  • 41 percent of survey respondents plan to invest in metadata repositories and data dictionaries to improve data governance.

To achieve best-in-class performance organizations must:

  • Implement data deuplication and data normalization tools to improve data quality and add a metadata repository to provide data governance.
  • Implement an MDM solution in the product data domain before moving it to the customer and financial data domains.
  • Test and implement a business continuity plan to improve your data migration performance and provide true failover functionality.
