MessageGate and Enterprise Strategy Group Outline Necessary Balance Between Practical Email Governance and Employee Productivity

MessageGate, Inc. released a podcast featuring Brian Babineau, a noted industry analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). The exclusive interview discusses top recommendations for balancing email governance controls with corporate productivity, as well as where to start when evaluating an email governance solution to meet security, regulatory and litigation preparedness requirements.

"A fine line exists between effective corporate email controls and optimizing employee collaboration and productivity," said Robert Pease, vice president of marketing for MessageGate. "Ease of use and the ability to share information instantaneously make email the preferred vehicle for corporate communication. The introduction of regulatory requirements and privacy laws, however, complicate the sensitive balancing act between productivity and control."

According to ESG, 35 percent of enterprise email traffic contains confidential data, whether it is customer information, financial records or intellectual property. Implementing a practical email governance policy to protect sensitive information flow is an appropriate starting point to create a minimum threshold of corporate responsibility. Yet, pushing forward without a solid plan throws many companies off.

"The growing number of enterprise email regulations and security risks spur most companies to immediately review technology solutions, without first looking at the larger picture," said Babineau. "IT and legal departments must work together to evaluate how email is being used through a message activity profile (MAP) and what controls are absolutely necessary to satisfy governance requirements before implementing hardware and software solutions."
