Taneja Group's First-of-a-Kind Quantitative Research Predicts Explosive Growth for Four Emerging Data Protection Markets

Taneja Group, an industry analyst firm focused on research and analysis of server and storage infrastructure trends, unveiled a new report that quantifies the size and growth of continuous data technologies (CDT), wide area data services (WDS), virtual tape libraries (VTL), and capacity optimized storage (COS) markets between 2006 - 2010. The report concludes these four data protection segments will grow at 45 percent CAGR and become a $3.549 billion market in aggregate by 2010. This research constitutes first-of-a-kind analysis into the magnitude and scope of these emerging markets - most of which have never been quantified or sufficiently covered by traditional analyst firms before.

Taneja Group believes that the data protection market is currently experiencing a technological sea change. The current leadership positions of backup and restore incumbents are being challenged by a new crop of small startups. Over the next five years, we believe that COS, CDT, and WDS technologies will come to the forefront as the primary mechanisms for solving the increasing challenges of backup and recovery faced by most storage administrators.

Based on a bottom-up analysis of individual firm business performance and product line mix, the research report draws the following conclusions:

  1. Capacity optimized storage solutions will become the number one absorber of tape-based solutions.
  2. Virtual tape library (VTL) market will continue to experience rapid growth through 2010 and grow to become over $1 billion market by 2010.
  3. The product mix will shift dramatically between capacity optimized and non-capacity optimized VTL solutions between 2006 and 2010.
  4. Wide area data services market including WAN optimization, wide area file services, and application acceleration products will grow at 50 percent CAGR through 2010.
  5. Continuous data technologies will erode market share from traditional copy creation technologies, like replication and snapshots, and will grow at a double digit CAGR through 2010.

The report entitled "The Next Generation Data Protection Forecast 2006-2010" represents the first in a new series of research provided by Taneja Group. This new research offering will focus on emerging technology markets in server and storage infrastructure that are not adequately covered by traditional analyst firms.
