University of Arkansas at Little Rock Using DataFlux

March 17, 2008 – The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) will use DataFlux dfPower Studio in its information quality master’s degree program.

 

UALR is the first institution to create a graduate degree program focused on information quality.

 

DataFlux dfPower Studio provides an end-to-end solution for critical data quality and data integration activities, including data discovery, business rule creation and execution, work flow management and other functions necessary for improving and consolidating data. dfPower Studio is an end-user environment that allows data quality professionals to enforce data standards throughout the enterprise.

 

The university uses dfPower Studio as a learning resource for the university’s “Data Quality Tools and Industry Landscape” course. dfPower Studio helps students become familiar with data quality products and how the products are used in real-world scenarios. Students also incorporate dfPower Studio’s data-matching capabilities into lab work and capstone projects.

 

In January of this year, the university introduced an information quality emphasis in its applied science PhD program to accommodate students who want to continue their studies to the doctoral level.

 

“DataFlux technology provides an easy-to-use interface that can help our students begin to understand the day-to-day processes necessary to maintaining information quality,” said Dr. John Talburt, professor of information science and Acxiom chair of information quality at UALR. “Beyond its application as a tool in the lab, our students have used dfPower Studio for a wide variety of projects, and it has served as a way to link the principles of course work with hands-on projects.”

 

The information quality program was founded in 2006. It has grown over the past two years, starting with a 2006 enrollment of 25 students to a current enrollment of 48. The program provides guidance for students who want to enter into IT careers with more experience and varied skill sets than studies in database administration and software development ordinarily provide. A similar program started at the University of Westminster in London and another is in the approval process at the University of South Australia in Adelaide.
