Should the DW team be involved in a data governance program and how do BI and the DW play a role?
Question: My company launched a data governance program. Should the data warehouse team be involved in this program and how do business intelligence (BI) and the data warehouse (DW) play in data governance?
Joe Oates Answer: The DW team should definitely be involved with the data governance program. Since data governance should be an enterprise level task and a DW should be an enterprise level task, not involving the DW team and the data governance program can lead to confusion.
Among the products of a data governance effort are definitions for important enterprise wide data attributes. The DW should be in conformance with these definitions. As a matter of fact, an existing DW can help jumpstart the data governance program because there are already definitions for data attributes defined for the DW. If possible, use these definitions as a strawman for the data stewards to circulate.
