Dataupia Satori Server
Sendio Integrates the Dataupia Satori Server to Protect Enterprises from Email Attacks
REVIEWER: Tim Lee-Thorp, vice president of marketing,
Sendio, Inc. BACKGROUND: Sendio provides an email integrity solution to
midmarket and enterprise customers via a combination of software as a service
and hardware as a service products. Sendio blocks spam, provides simple end-user
control over unwanted email and eliminates viruses and other malware. HARDWARE PLATFORMS: The Dataupia Satori Server, Sendio
I.C.E. Box services appliances that run Linux and the PostgreSQL database. PROBLEM SOLVED: The initial architecture for the Sendio
I.C.E. Box email integrity system used individual server appliances at each
customer location. As the installed base grew, a centralized facility to
coordinate the management and ongoing software distribution to the distributed
servers was deployed. This year, the product development roadmap called for the
addition of two new centralized services: a reporting process and an email
sender authentication and reputation database. Collecting and storing
statistical information and metadata from a distributed community of these
real-time transactional systems requires a high-performance data warehouse.
Further, this central database is constantly being queried by each I.C.E. Box as
part of the email processing workflow. Our concern was how to create a back-end
data warehousing and reporting center that would serve our current customer
base, grow as we added customers and not require an unreasonable up-front
investment. We sought a cost-effective, low-latency data management system that
could be easily integrated into our existing database infrastructure. One of the
challenges we faced in building a highly scalable platform was how to
incorporate the data management system without changing the core applications
and underlying SQL database. Sendio selected the Dataupia Satori Server because
it fit into our existing IT infrastructure and workflow operations. With
Dataupia, we could augment current technology to realize immediate results, not
rip and replace. There was no need to disrupt our existing data management
system. PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: There are two general areas of
functionality in the Dataupia appliances that Sendio takes advantage of: the
simplicity of the modular appliance architecture and the simplicity of
applications integration. As a turnkey appliance, each server delivers a known
level of performance and storage space at a very aggressive price point. As we
add customers and our database grows, we simply install another appliance with
no other infrastructure changes. Similarly, we found that it was very
straightforward to couple our application servers to the Dataupia storage
servers. It took only 16 days from the delivery of the first Satori Server to
the start of customer field trials, which was less than 25 percent of the time
we had originally budgeted.
STRENGTHS: The three attributes that sold us on the Dataupia
Satori Server were transparency, scalability and affordability. Dataupias data
management system supports applications running on Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server
and DB2 databases natively, which delivered instant compatibility within our
existing infrastructure, enables the data capacity of the Sendio email integrity
services environment to grow continuously, without disrupting applications or
data warehouse operations. The Dataupia Satori Server has a very low total cost
of ownership.
WEAKNESSES: The Dataupia Satori Server does not have a
management console, which required our developers to spend additional time
physically at our hosting center. However, our understanding is that Dataupia
has recently added this feature to its product, and we look forward to using it
in the future.
SELECTION CRITERIA: A consultant recommended that we look at
Dataupia. Not only did their proposed solution meet our technical and budgetary
requirements, but we received excellent personal attention from their sales
team. They gave us an evaluation unit, and it did everything they promised. The
test application that we wrote took less than one day to implement.
DELIVERABLES: The information collected and stored in the
data warehouse is used to support an email integrity sender authentication and
reputation service and to create customer-generated historical behavior reports.
VENDOR SUPPORT: Dataupia has provided excellent customer
support. They are quick to respond to any issues that come up. The best part of
working with the Dataupia team is that we feel that they are an extension of our
business rather than just a vendor. It was clear to us from the start that they
fully supported our mission.
DOCUMENTATION: The documentation seems to be quite complete,
but we have needed to use it very little.
