TechStats: Adoption of Open Source Databases
Solid Information Technology recently conducted a survey of attendees at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo held in San Francisco in August 2006 on adoption patterns of open source database technology. The goal was to uncover the barriers to adoption and what features were desired.

Figure 1
More than half of the companies have the most problems with maintenance when using databases. Thirty-four percent have the biggest problems with the right configuration and the installation of the database. Performance, support and programming of the database were also mentioned as common database issues.

Figure 2
Sixty-six percent of attendees at LinuxWorld currently have an open source initiative in place.

Figure 3
Forty-five percent of the companies do not have an open source database initiative because of the reliability and high availability of databases. Other reasons not to have an open source strategy are strong service-level agreements, performance, support or training.

Figure 4
Seventy percent of participants who already implemented an open source strategy are using either MySQL, MyISAM or InnoDB.
