Business Intelligence: The Race Up the Stack

Regulatory compliance initiatives, a proliferation of data sources and customer demand for real-time decision-making capabilities in both the analytical and operational sides of their organizations have forced many of the players in the BI industry to "climb the stack."

The BI spectrum in Figure 1 shows the growth of the genre of applications coined corporate, business and enterprise performance management. BI platforms will become full-cycle decision automation systems that include tools to design strategy, monitor process activity, gauge performance indicators and act accordingly.

Figure 1: Traditional BI vendors are moving to customer-facing applications.

The Boston Corporate Finance report entitled, "Enterprise Integration Software Industry Spotlight," focuses on the convergence of BI's traditional role with other areas of integration software solutions and identifies some of the consolidation trends that can be expected in BI, corporate performance management, business process management and other integration software sectors as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Disparate worlds of BI, BPM, EAI and ECM are merging into SOA integration layers that automate business processes across the enterprise and handle all forms of data.
