Industry Implementations

The Bank of Beirut and the Arab Countries Selects IBM

IBM and its business partner, Computer Business Machines, announced that the Bank of Beirut and the Arab Countries SAL (BBAC), a commercial bank in Lebanon, has selected IBM software, hardware and industry expertise to create a business intelligence infrastructure designed to help the bank manage risk and boost profitability.

The Information on Demand solution to be used by BBAC will be comprised of technology and services from IBM and its business partner, Pexim. Under the project, IBM will create a data warehouse that will allow the bank to comply with Basel II guidelines, as well as the regulatory requirements of Banque du Liban, Lebanon's Central Bank.

Once the solution is implemented, BBAC will become one of the first banks in the Middle East to achieve compliance with Basel II. In doing so, the bank expects to have one of the best risk management systems in the region, which will aid its efforts to assess the risks and opportunities associated with making the loans required for reconstruction work underway today in Beirut.

"Businesses today face remarkable challenges in managing large amounts of data and information. IBM's Information on Demand solutions help organizations use their information to better serve their customers and reduce costs," said Mr. Pierre Abijaoude, CEO, Computer Business Machines. "The solution we are providing to BBAC will help move their business forward by increasing the bank's efficiency and profitability while reducing risk."

BT Calls on Kalido for Master Data Management

Kalido announced BT, a world provider of communications solutions and services, has selected Kalido active information management software to provide a strategic reference data platform for Group Finance management reporting as part of BT's Chorus Project, a global ERP initiative. Kalido will provide a single, strategic master data management (MDM) solution to centrally control and manage finance information. The new platform will enable BT to increase the accuracy and effectiveness of enterprise reporting while driving down integration and compliance costs.

"As a global company operating in more than 170 countries, our organization faces complex reporting challenges. With multiple silos of data and platforms that don't effectively talk to one another, we require a flexible and cost-effective solution to manage reference data and deliver reliable performance management reports," said Martin Hunter, Head of Reference Data Management within BT Group Finance. "Kalido has the proven expertise to help us consolidate information and transform our enterprise information management capabilities."

New Zealand Sails Full Speed Ahead with Applix

announced that Maritime New Zealand (Maritime NZ), the agency responsible for maritime safety, security and environmental protection, has chosen the Applix platform to fulfill its reporting, budgeting and forecasting needs. The Applix solution, implemented by local reseller Cortell New Zealand Limited, was subjected to a rigorous evaluation process, but beat out the competition due to its business analytics features, functionality and flexibility.

"Initially, the focus was solely on budgeting and overhead allocations with information being fed back into the general ledger for subsequent reporting," said Trevor Coad, General Manager, Corporate Services of Maritime NZ. "However, once the team realized the power of Applix's technology, we amended our requirements and significantly expanded the project so that all reporting would flow through the new solution."

"We conducted a very aggressive review process which included various, in-depth evaluation areas," Coad continued. "We visited reference sites of Applix and other players in the market and were particularly impressed by Applix's recalculation speed and flexibility. This gave us confidence to choose Applix."

Maritime NZ serves a wide range of maritime operations from large merchant ships to small recreational craft in New Zealand ports. The primary function of the organization is to ensure the marine environment is safe, secure and clean for all its users by developing, monitoring and enforcing safety and protection rules, while educating the community about best practices in safety and environmental standards. This responsibility includes a wide range of maritime activity, such as ensuring lighthouses and radio services are working properly, inspecting ships, as well as investigating accidents, oil spills and other such incidents.
