DAMA (Data Management Association):
A Message from the President

Column published in DM Review Magazine
March 2003 Issue

  By Michael H. Brackett

2002 was another successful year for DAMA International (DAMA-I), its affiliated chapters and members-at-large.

Our Board meeting at the DAMA- I Conference in San Antonio was dedicated to strategic planning. Teams were established to develop tactical plans in our primary areas of interest. These plans will be brought together into a long-range strategic plan for DAMA-I.

Our Web page (www.dama.org) continues to expand as we develop alliances with organizations that provide discounts to DAMA members, enhance the educational sources and document existing standards related to data management. Our member database will be fully operational this year, and the members-only portion of our Web page will be tied to that member database.

Our conferences continue to improve in scope and content. In spite of the economic situation, the attendance is holding and the evaluations are high. This year we are planning the DAMA-I Conference in Orlando, the DAMA-I Europe Conference in London and the DAMA-I Australia Conference. Our conference planning workload has grown to the point that we will outsource the conference planning tasks.

We continue to recognize outstanding effort in the data management discipline. During the 2002 DAMA-I Conference in San Antonio, several people were presented with individual achievement awards; and John Zachman was awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award.

We are continuing a major initiative in the area of certification and licensing that establishes criteria and testing for architects, engineers and tradespeople. An ex officio position has been established on the DAMA-I Board for the ICCP representative. We will also be working with educational institutions to establish courses supporting the formalization of certification and licensing of data management professionals and practitioners.

We continue to establish and support new chapters, and increase our members-at-large who are not close to an established chapter. The chapter Presidents form a Presidents Council and elect a Presidents Council Liaison who is also an ex officio member of the DAMA-I Board. The DAMA-I Advisors provide insight into the direction of the data management discipline as well as the direction and activities for DAMA- I.

For more information about DAMA-I, please check our Web page at www.dama.org, or send me an e- mail at president@dama.org.
