Everyone, it seems, wants into the enterprise portal business these days. But rather than building an entity entirely from scratch, some players are getting into the market in a bigger way by making an acquisition. And the latest company to make an acquisition is Toronto-based Hummingbird, which is acquiring PeopleDoc Ltd. for an undisclosed sum. Based in the United Kingdom, PeopleDoc is a document collaboration and customer information management software development company. Hummingbird will integrate PeopleDoc's collaboration applications into its existing document management and enterprise portal products.
Last year, PeopleDoc received $4 million in venture capital funding from 3i plc and Scottish Equity Partnership to launch a North American operation. PeopleDoc software embeds e-mail, faxes and other forms of unstructured customer information from across an enterprise into line-of- business applications.
