The formal release of Oracle's newest database software - 9i - won't happen for another few days, but that timing certainly isn't stopping analyst and research firms from offering some preliminary opinions. Oracle touts 9i as a product with availability features that minimize planned and unplanned downtime.
Oracle also says that 9i will be tightly integrated and unified with Java, XML and SQL. The analysts are already calling 9i "a solid product." The database is being beta-tested by more than 300 Oracle customers and business partners. "What's going to be interesting to watch about 9i is how aggressive Oracle will be in the market," says Mike Schiff, vice president of e-business and business intelligence at Current Analysis Inc., Sterling, Va. "They have market momentum and that's something IBM and the rest of the competition are trying to do something about."
