It's going to be a big week for software announcements, as well as gauging market reaction regarding the latest jockeying between IBM and Oracle. As each software developer rolls out its latest database product, analysts - and data warehousing and business intelligence professionals - are focusing on which company will make the biggest splash. IBM struck first on June 8 when Big Blue announced the availability of DB2 7.2.
According to IBM, what makes 7.2 different from previous versions of DB2 is the software's self-managing features, which include automatic incremental restore and the DB2 performance configuration smart guide with WebSphere 4.0. IBM announced the new product in May and is now rolling the software out to the market just days before Oracle is set to launch its latest database product, 9i. "Everybody is getting aggressive these days and that includes IBM and Oracle," says Mike Schiff, vice president of e-business and business intelligence at Current Analysis Inc., Sterling, Va. "Everybody is trying to steal attention from one another, particularly as they battle for market share." For more information, please visit www.ibm.com .
