September 28, 2000 -- IBM continued its dominance over Oracle and other vendors by retaining the number one spot in the business intelligence and data warehouse (BI/DW) marketplace as reported by a recent study by Survey.com.

For the 1999 year, the total BI/DW market grew to nearly 62 percent over the preceding year as 31 vendors enjoyed revenues of over $100 million. According to the research report, IBM was the marketshare leader with an estimated $4.97 billion in revenue in 1999. IBM held the number one positions in software, systems and services for business intelligence.

"The growth rate for the BI/DW market in 1999 was just phenomenal .... IBM held steadfast to the top spot on the vendor list, at a fair distance from its competitors," said Nancy Stewart, senior analyst at Survey.com.

IBM demonstrated 17 percent growth from its estimated 1998 revenues of $4.25 billion in the overall BI/DW marketplace. By comparison, Oracle occupied the fourth position with an estimated $1.3 billion in revenue in 1999, less than one-third the figure generated by IBM. IBM also pulled ahead of Andersen Consulting by attaining the top position in the services market.
