We are currently evaluating meta data repository tools and the vendors sell themselves through their flexibility and extensibility.

Q:

We are currently evaluating meta data repository tools and the vendors sell themselves through their "flexibility and extensibility." In effect, they seem to provide only a meta data platform and some handy interface to RDBMS, ETL and modeling tools. What I'd really like to find is a vendor that can provide a "canned" meta data model so we don't have to define our own from scratch. Do you know of any sources for this?

A:

David Marco's Answer: Most of the "true" meta data integration vendor's tools come with a meta model (CA Platinum, Unisys Universal Repository, Viasoft Rochade, etc.). Regardless of the vendor, there is a strong possibility you may have to modify their model to suit your corporation's specific needs. If you want to read an article on meta data integration you can find one in the "Resource Center" of my company's web site: www.EWSolutions.com

Sid Adelman's Answer: J.D. Welch developed a pretty comprehensive meta data model. The URL is www.datawing.com

Douglas Hackney's Answer: J.D. Welch had a meta data model that we found very useful. Try contacting him and see if it is still available.

Chuck Kelley's Answer: There are a few tools that provide their own meta data model - Intellidex, Prism's Directory Manager (now Ardent). They also provide for customization.
