Given the often predicted growth in demand for data warehousing, data mining and business intelligence capabilities as a result of the e-commerce boom, I am studying the transition from being a software project manager to a data miner and/or data warehouser. So, given the individual strengths and positions of SQL, Oracle and IBM in the database world, which certification program would you recommend for me, a software project manager with an MBA and extensive securities and life/health insurance experience? By the way, I live in San Diego, which tends to be a small company city.
David Marco's Answer: If you want to get into project management for data warehousing and your background is that of a vendor software manager, I would recommend none of these three certifications. Instead I would recommend taking a course specifically on data warehouse project management. Project management has several fundamental differences between software and applications.
Chuck Kelley's Answer: If you want to be the DBA for a data warehouse, the Oracle DBA certification program might be useful since it teaches about DBA functions. As for general certification programs for data warehousing, I do not know of any that I would recommend. There are some good courses available.
