Gartner Institute Launches Advanced-Level IT Project Management Certification

Gartner Institute, an independent organization dedicated to the improvement and advancement of the information technology (IT) industry's workforce, announced the availability of IT Project Management E- Challenge, a mastery level, online project management simulation that tests an IT professional's ability to manage a complex IT project from start to finish.

IT Project Management E-Challenge, delivered over a three-month period via the Web, requires IT project managers to work through a hypothetical case study of a company that is overhauling its software, hardware, operational requirements and support systems. Candidates are scored on their ability to manage the project to completion and save the company from bankruptcy. After passing IT Project Management E-Challenge, a person will be awarded a Gartner Certified Professional (GCP) in IT Project Management credential, valid for two years.

"Our research shows that the greatest contributor to the increase in IT project failure, delay and cost overrun is poor project management," said Ted Smith, chief executive officer of Gartner Institute. "IT Project Management E-Challenge builds IT project management proficiency through experience ? in 'Internet time.' More importantly, IT professionals who complete IT Project Management E-Challenge will learn how to manage the pressures, technical problems and political dynamics that naturally occur in any IT project. This credential is proof that a person is not only knowledgeable, but is also uniquely skilled to manage the most difficult IT project work."

IT Project Management E-Challenge is recommended for IT project managers who possess at least two years experience in IT project management and are seeking an advanced level IT project management certification. Candidates must be a Gartner Certified Associate (GCA) in IT Project Management or possess Project Management Institute's Project Management Professional (PMP) certification to enroll in IT Project Management E-Challenge. The simulation costs $1,200, is compatible with computers running Microsoft Windows and requires the use of Netscape Communicator or Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word 97, Microsoft Project or Microsoft Project Viewer and Acrobat Reader.
