Recently, our organization has been restructured so that one team focuses on data warehouse activities and the other on reference data. This feels like a logical move that will allow us to focus on those areas more efficiently. Do you know of any others that may be doing this? Do you recommend this as a good strategy?
David Marco's Answer: I assume that by "reference data" you are referring to meta data. The organizational approach that you are implementing is a common one in most corporations. I do believe that this is a good strategy, as both of these teams should work at a peer level. When the meta data team reports to the data warehouse team leader, quite often the meta data repository is forgotten or cast aside. The meta data team and the data warehouse team must work together, as both of their work directly impacts the other. A muddled data warehouse architecture will directly impact the quality of the meta data repository. Conversely, a poorly designed repository will greatly reduce the effectiveness of the data warehouse system.
