What exactly is knowledge management?

Ask The Experts published in DMReview.com

  By David Marco

Q:

What exactly is knowledge management? How does knowledge management help the data warehousing developer? Are there any knowledge management tools available?

A:

David Marco's Answer: Knowledge management is the gathering and sharing of intellectual capital (data, information and knowledge) and organizational learning to provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Knowledge management can benefit a corporation in a number of ways, including:

  • Leverage "lessons learned" to lower expenses.
  • Share information to generate new ideas and increase revenues or decrease expenses.
  • Creating additional corporate value through the sharing of knowledge.
  • Increase ability to adapt the corporation to change and opportunities in the marketplace.
  • Innovation through the sharing of past solutions and collective ideas.

The key to any knowledge management effort is the meta data repository. The meta data repository captures and disseminates the corporate "knowledge" to many different user groups including the data warehouse developers. The data warehouse developers can use the meta data repository to understand how the current data warehouse is build and how new changes will impact the data warehouse.
