What are the objectives that should be considered for a data warehousing strategy?

Ask The Experts published in DMReview.com

By David Marco and Douglas Hackney and Sid Adelman

Q:

What are the objectives that should be considered for a data warehousing strategy?

A:

Douglas Hackney's Answer: There is only one that is really relevant: the relief of specific, life threatening, politically meaningful business plan. If you cannot pass this test, your strategy is bankrupt and your project likely to fail.

David Marco's Answer: To solve specific, measurable business problems. A data warehouse that doesn't provide value to the business is a failure.

Sid Adelman's Answer: A data warehouse strategy should include the ability to share data, minimize the number of tools and interfaces, a strong emphasis on useful meta data, data quality and metrics that measure usage, performance and resources used.
