IBM and 3Com in $1 Billion Pact
Armonk, N.Y. and Santa Clara, Calif., Aug. 2, 1999 - IBM and 3Com Corporation announced a patent cross-licensing agreement valued at more than $1 billion, covering an extensive portfolio of networking and communications technologies. The two companies will license their extensive patent portfolios to enable each company's development teams to bring products to market faster.
The two companies already use each other's technology and have been collaborating on products for more than seven years. Some of the products include the IBM 8260 Multiprotocol hubs and IBM 8271 Ethernet LAN switches, PC modems and network interface cards and IBM's customer chip.
Under the agreement, each company will receive a license under all patents that relate to their specific field of interest. IBM's portfolio includes patents on a wide range of networking technologies, and 3Com's portfolio includes hardware and software patents.
