META Group Research Shows that Nearly 70 Percent of Satisfied IT Customers Are Willing to Defect to New Suppliers

META Group Inc., an IT research, advisory services and consulting firm, recently announced findings which show that nearly 70 percent of satisfied IT customers consider using a different IT supplier for their next purchase. According to META Group, value expectations from IT buyers is rapidly changing. As a result, IT buyers actively look for suppliers that can meet their evolving demands. The ramifications of these changes can be found in the following statistics:

  • Nine out of the top 10 largest software suppliers in 1981 did not make the list of top suppliers in 1996.
  • Eight out of the top 10 suppliers in 1986 did not make the 1996 list.
  • Four of the top 10 suppliers in 1991 failed to keep pace in 1996.
  • Nearly 10 percent of IT buyers/customers who claimed to be extremely satisfied with their current IT products would consider purchasing from another IT supplier the next time they are in the market.
  • Almost 50 percent who report strong of satisfaction would consider a new supplier.
  • Seventy percent who report average levels of satisfaction would consider defecting.
