My management has read some articles on the ROI from a data warehouse.

  By Sid Adelman

Q:

My management has read some articles on the ROI from a data warehouse. They want me to tell them what ROI we will be getting. What kind of ROI should I be committing to?

A:

Sid Adelman's answer: The ROI is dependent on a number of factors. The first is whether you succeed or fail. It's possible your data warehouse will never be implemented - hence, zip return. Assuming you succeed, the ROI is primarily dependent on what application you choose. If you choose one that has little benefit to your organization, even the best data warehouse implementation will have a poor ROI. Do NOT commit to any ROI, and do not let management impose an "industry average" ROI on your performance plan.
