Review of: Sunopsis Data Conductor from Sunopsis Inc.

REVIEWER: Paul Floyd, senior vice president, Research and Development, Operations and Engineering for iBasis, Inc.

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1996, iBasis, Inc. is a carrier of international voice traffic and a provider of prepaid calling services. iBasis delivers international call completion services over their global VoIP network to more than 100 countries. The company's customers include consumer VoIP providers who outsource their international voice traffic to iBasis to reduce their cost of transport and service support, while providing service quality indistinguishable from that of traditional phone networks. iBasis carries approximately 9 billion minutes of VoIP traffic over the network each year, generating a total revenue of approximately $500 million.

PLATFORMS: Netezza Performance Server 8250.

PROBLEM SOLVED: iBasis consistently achieved significant business growth since its inception. As call volumes increased - often 40 to 50 percent per year - so did the amount of data being produced. In 2005, iBasis realized that the data warehouse we deployed in 2002 was no longer able to meet the company's data needs. It was becoming very difficult to manage the business at the high level of granularity we required. The sheer volume of data needing processing forced management to wait 18 to 24 hours for access to critical operational metrics. To optimize business efficiencies and to maximize revenues and margins, iBasis realized it needed to develop a new data warehouse environment that could effectively handle the company's huge volumes of batch, real-time and near real-time data. How does a company find an efficient way to move three and a half years of data while handling approximately 150 million new transactions daily? For iBasis, the answer was Sunopsis Data Conductor. Using Sunopsis Data Conductor, iBasis was able to meet and exceed their migration goals and was able to deploy a new data warehousing environment within 12 weeks.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: After assessing multiple data integration solutions, iBasis selected Sunopsis Data Conductor for several key reasons. First, the product was able to efficiently aggregate, transform and load large volumes of data without experiencing any performance degradation. The performance processing gains are achieved using Sunopsis' unique approach, which extracts and loads data directly into the data warehouse. Secondly, Sunopsis Data Conductor was the best fit for meeting the company's batch, real-time and near real-time needs. Additionally, using a consistent model for accessing and processing data from multiple sources, iBasis was able to reduce the time and cost affiliated with code development and code maintenance.

STRENGTHS: The Sunopsis Data Conductor leverages the power of the Netezza Performance Server using open extensions and utilities, which make it possible to generate native SQL. Being able to push data to the warehouse in real time, iBasis now can quickly and easily view aggregated data pertaining to quality of service, access cost and capacity data - data critical for managing overall business profitability. The product's learning curve was minimal. iBasis was fully operational with Sunopsis Data Conductor literally within a few days. In less than three months, iBasis was able to implement the first phase of the new data warehouse. With the help of Sunopsis Data Conductor, today iBasis operates a 4.5TB data warehouse that contains more than 8 million records.

WEAKNESSES: Given the complex nature of our transformations, we often needed assistance in defining the best approach to meet our needs. More detailed best practices would have been useful.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The new data warehouse environment needed to be able to handle large volumes of data - in batch, real time and near real time. Essentially, Sunopsis Data Conductor was chosen for its speed and agility. No other solution was going to be able to handle our high volume of data while also providing immediate ROI.

DELIVERABLES: Using Sunopsis Data Conductor, iBasis is now able to process large volumes of data in near real time, making it possible to access critical data necessary to make well-informed decisions.

VENDOR SUPPORT: Not only does Sunopsis provide superior and very advanced technology, it also provides a tremendous level of service and support. Their technical team is extremely competent. They go above and beyond what is expected and are always able to address any issues encountered.

DOCUMENTATION: The documentation is well organized, clearly written and very helpful.
