Compassion International Fulfills a Data Intelligence Mission with Pervasive

Product Review published in DM Review Magazine

Review of: Pervasive Business Integrator from Pervasive Software

REVIEWER: George Mudrak, enterprise data architect for Compassion International.

BACKGROUND: Compassion International is a Christian child advocacy ministry that has been helping underprivileged children since 1952. Compassion International releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. With programs spanning prenatal care to college education, Compassion International seeks to positively impact each child's individual development.

PLATFORMS: PCs, Windows XP, Windows 2003, SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Upon an extensive look into our existing infrastructure, Compassion International recognized a need for more comprehensive data availability. We identified two important challenges: to develop data marts for internal groups and to enhance usability of structured, database-centric information that would be corporately available to the entire organization and historically preserved in an enterprise data warehouse. The organization collects and stores data on more than 770,000 children.

PRODUCT FUNCTIONALITY: With Pervasive Business Integrator, processes involving a data mart for Compassion International's child ministries were bundled into workflow, allowing data analytics to drive decision-making and direct changes back to the owners of data for more meaningful edits. Compassion International developed a dynamic multithreaded process to move data from an OLTP into a data warehouse during a proof of concept, significantly improving upon the existing two-thread DTS package. Pervasive Business Integrator is going to be used to develop a production data warehouse, operational repository and secure OLTP. Overall, Pervasive integration enables the organization's information to be available for people to see it, understand it and take action to more effectively serve its children and sponsors.

STRENGTHS: The seamless, flexible integration Pervasive Business Integrator brings to Compassion International has enabled the ministry's IT group to improve its enterprise data development efficiency. Compassion International is now able to create single files from multiple data sources as a building block to delivering data integrity throughout the organization. We will use this project's success as a model for other organizational data systems. With decoupling as a core part of the Pervasive integration, Compassion International is able to be flexible with data sources as well as improve components as necessary.

WEAKNESSES: Compassion International wants to support multiple distinct, physically separate databases as destinations within the same process. Pervasive Business Integrator does not provide that capability.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Selection criteria included a Gartner recommendation, proofs of concept and an enterprise strategy that focuses on purchase and configure rather than build, reducing integration complexity, preferring packaged solutions, treating information as an enterprise asset and message-based interfaces as well as cost.

DELIVERABLES: With Pervasive Business Integrator, we have gained an ETL solution that can integrate many types of data into a production environment. It contributes to data flow, reduces data and file duplication, provides an up-to-date and single view of public/operational data to support decision-making and supports distinct ownership of applications and data. This data movement results in an easily maintained and monitored solution that should lead to improved efficiency and service. The Pervasive Business Integrator multithreaded proof-of-concept process moved data from an online processing database into a data warehouse easily spinning 10 threads running in parallel, whereas the existing solution ran only two threads.

VENDOR SUPPORT: The vendor has helped us work through any issues and has been willing to commit any resources necessary during pre- and post-implementation periods. For example, Pervasive provided follow-up training to Compassion International's technical staff to ensure that trainees felt adequately prepared for their tasks - at Pervasive's cost. Pervasive continues to work closely with us to make sure we have the right resources at the right times.

DOCUMENTATION: The Integration Manager installation directions are accurate and appropriate. The documentation assumes that you have some knowledge with Pervasive Business Integrator to verify installation.
