Information Management Trends from Ventana Research

Information management technology provides the tools that give access, relevance, timeliness, quality and security to information. It aims to improve organizational performance. Ventana Research recently asked IT professionals, business executives, managers and information users questions about the components of information management, structured data, unstructured data, information access and enterprise structure. The study, "Information Management: Actions, Intentions, Perceptions and Trends in Information," analyzes the maturity of information management at respondents' organizations using the Ventana Research Maturity Model.

The People category of the information management maturity model examines groups and how effectively organizations manage information.

This category of the maturity analysis examines the way in which organizations initiate, carry out and measure information management processes as well as how users perceive them.

The results of this research reveal the pervasiveness of information management in today's organizations as well as how it is understood and used. The maturity analysis is particularly revealing because it shows that, when plotted on their maturity hierarchy, about one-third of respondents' organizations have reached only the second of four levels of maturity. An additional one-fourth of respondents' organizations are at the third level, but only 10 percent have reached the most mature level of information management.

Ventana evaluates information maturity by examining the types of information architectures that organizations have in place and the functions they support.

Companies' technology maturity is based on the types and sophistication of information systems they have in place or plan to deploy in the near future.
