Noted Data Warehousing and BI Consulting Companies Intelligent Solutions and BI Research Team Up

November 1, 2005

Claudia Imhoff and Colin White presented "Extending the Corporate Information Factory to Support the Smart and Agile Business" at the TDWI World Conference in Orlando, Florida.

World-renowned data warehousing, business intelligence and business integration experts Intelligent Solutions and BI Research have teamed up to develop CIFe, an extension of the Corporate Information Factory (CIF), the practical and proven framework that shows companies how to successfully build an enterprise-wide information infrastructure. The CIF was developed in 1998 by data warehousing pioneers, Bill Inmon and Dr. Claudia Imhoff, and it has been used as a blueprint by hundreds of leading organizations worldwide. The CIFe was developed by Intelligent Solutions a leading provider of business intelligence and customer relationship management consulting, and BI Research, a research, education and consulting company specializing in business intelligence and business integration. The development work involved merging and extending the concepts of the existing CIF with an earlier version of the Smart BI Framework developed by BI Research. The results of this work are two new frameworks that collectively provide the required infrastructure for supporting the smart and agile business.

According to Dr. Imhoff, business and technology requirements for business intelligence have changed dramatically over the years, which prompted her to partner her company with White to extend the CIF. "Corporate initiatives such as customer and supply chain management, and legislative requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley, have forced corporations to rethink how they deploy BI applications," Dr. Imhoff said. "It was time to refresh the CIF."

The objective of CIFe is to provide a business intelligence environment for delivering consistent and high quality business information to IT applications and business users. The role of the Smart BI Framework is to identify the technology components that are required to integrate this BI environment into the overall IT infrastructure. From the perspective of four business forces?plans, process, people and performance?the Smart BI Framework integrates the business performance environment provided by CIFe with plans, processes and people.

>According to White, supporting today's volatile and competitive business climate requires companies to work smarter and become more agile. To achieve this, organizations must create an appropriate architecture and exploit modern information technologies that enable them to tightly integrate their business transaction, business collaboration and business intelligence environments so that personalized business information can be delivered to anyone, at anytime, and from anyplace. "The objective of CIFe and its associated Smart BI Framework is to support such an environment," White said. "The ultimate use of such a flexible infrastructure enables any company to become a smart business."

Copresenting at TDWI World Conference

Imhoff and White teamed up at the TDWI World Conference event in Orlando, Florida to detail the CIFe in a new course entitled "Extending the Corporate Information Factory to Support the Smart and Agile Business." This course reviewed the Extended CIF and showed how its new features enable agile and smart business operations.
