Kalido Technical Advisory Board Members and Guest Speakers Call for "Data-Driven" CFOs

    Online News published in DMReview.com
August 15, 2005

Kalido, the leading adaptive enterprise data warehouse software provider, hosted an industry panel discussion that recommended the need for "data-driven" Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) who not only decipher business and financial data during organizational change, but also understand the data's origin and impact from a business process and IT perspective. This panel was held in conjunction with the opening assembly of the Kalido Technical Advisory Board.

With more than 150 years of combined data management expertise and comprising the most respected names in the data warehousing industry, the August 9th panel featured four of Kalido's new technical advisory board members: Boris Evelson, Textra Group, Inc.; Bill Inmon, Inmon Data Systems; Mike Schiff, MAS Strategies and Current Analysis Inc; and Dr. David Waddington, Tyson Consulting and Ventana Research. They were joined by Dr. Steve P. Lerner, global IS projects director at animal health company Merial Limited; Daniel Gaines, a Knightsbridge Solutions senior principal; and Bob Potter, chief executive officer of Kalido.

In today's business environment where change is the only constant, a "data-driven" CFO is defined by his/her ability to lead the organization through change by assessing and acting upon information to make decisions critical to improving corporate performance. In addition, today's CFO must be an active participant in the process from which data is derived, following the corporate audit trail. As CFOs are focused on mitigating risk, minimizing cost and addressing compliance issues, they are seeking flexible IT solutions, which were previously unavailable, to identify key performance indicators.

The panel urged CFOs to become more "data-driven" by proactively supporting IT strategies, not just budgets, to help drive business goals forward and contribute to ongoing strategy development.  The panelists also recommended that CFOs more closely collaborate with their IT departments to:

  • "Dig under the data minefield" to extract what data is needed, when it is needed
  • Ensure the consistency of metrics across the organization to safeguard against the misinterpretation of results
  • Institute and adhere to compliance-strength controls and processes

The panel concluded that business performance and compliance remain the principal concerns for all CFOs, regardless of industry.  In addition, leveraging innovative technology such as business-process driven data warehousing and master data management is critical to ensure that reporting stays accurate and up-to-date as the business changes.

The panel moderator was Dr. David Waddington, founder, Tyson Consulting BV, and vice president and research director, Ventana Research. Dr. Waddington is head of information architecture research globally at Ventana Research. He is former Chief IT Architect for Unilever Foods Europe and was Kalido's first commercial customer.

Panel participants included:

  • Boris Evelson, founder and managing partner, Textra Group, Inc. and member of Kalido Technical Advisory Board. Evelson is a seasoned IT executive/strategist with more than 23 years of experience on Wall Street, providing strategic technology advisory services to enterprises, vendors and investors.
  • Daniel Gaines, senior principal and chief technology officer for the Health and Life Sciences practice at Knightsbridge Solutions. In his 18 years of consulting and software development experience, Gaines has specialized in the design, implementation and management of analytic systems and data warehouses.
  • Bill Inmon, president, Inmon Data Systems and member of Kalido Technical Advisory Board.  Known as the "father of the data warehouse," Inmon has more than 35 years of experience and has been instrumental in the adoption of critical data warehouse technology among enterprise organizations.
  • Dr. Steven P. Lerner, director global IS projects, Merial Limited. Dr. Lerner, in close collaboration with his company's CFO, is leading the implementation of a global data-warehousing project for financial reporting across 33 different entities at Kalido's customer Merial.
  • Bob Potter, chief executive officer, Kalido. Potter, a seasoned New England business executive, drives the company's international growth strategy. He has a long-standing track record of growing and establishing enterprise software companies as market leaders.
  • Mike Schiff, president and principal analyst, MAS Strategies, and vice president, data warehousing and business intelligence, Current Analysis, Inc., and member of Kalido Technical Advisory Board.  Schiff is a leading data warehouse and business intelligence industry analyst with more than 25 years experience in data management technology and implementations.
